History

A picture of the fireplace at the Union Hotel The Union Hotel, established in 1855, is the cornerstone of the historic town of LaPorte. Standing proudly throughout the days of the Gold Rush, the Great Depression, and the prosperity of recent times, the Union Hotel has long been the meeting place of choice for groups, friends and families.

The Union Hotel was first built by the Murray family in 1855 and opened at its current location at Kittis Hotel. It was renamed The Union Hotel in 1860, in honor of the local Union soldiers.

The original hotel was destroyed by fire, and the current structure was built in 1906. The only remaining portion of the original structure is the brick safe, which in its day stored the gold discovered in the area. The safe still stands in the center of the hotel.
